Lunar Eclipse and Supermoon 2015

We drove 4.5 hours to Newport Rhode Island because it was cloudy where we live. Sure enough we got clear sky for the whole night. We checked ahead that when the eclipse starts at 9:07 pm the moon will be roughly East. Using a star chart app on the iPad we checked for where the moon will be at Maximum total eclipse which is SouthEast and where it ends which will be roughly South.

We found a good spot on the harbor walk. There are a series of benches right next to our parking spot which is perfect. There are sailboats and water reflections. We set up 3 tripods and mounted 3 cameras each with difference lenses. A telephoto for the close up, a wide angle for the stacked sequence and another medium zoom for people images. We were all set by 8 pm. We started photographing the super moon. We set the timer for time lapse and started shooting around 9 pm. Full eclipse started 10:11 pm which is when you can see the blood moon. Total eclipse maxed out at 10:47pm and began exiting the shadow by 11:23pm. Partial eclipse ended by 12:27am.

The temperature was cool around 60's. There was a bar behind us blasting some music. The walkway was quiet but occasionally some locals or tourists passed by. Some sat down on the bench and watched with us. Some were curious enough to stop and took a peek at our cameras. It was a great night.

We returned home on empty highway. I have never seen BQE or I-95 so empty before. After some sleep and a full work day, I stacked the photos and was very happy with the result.

It was my 4th lunar eclipse viewing and the best. My first attempt at photographing lunar eclipse was from the days of film camera. The second try was on a very cold and windy winter night. Due to the strong wind causing camera shake I did not get many good shots. I did not have a timer then. The previous eclipse was very cloudy and the moon was only visible a few times. So this is the first real success. I bet the clear air outside of the metro area helps too.  It is well worth the long drive. Like someone said, "I go the extra mile to get this!"
